Continuing the theme from my previous series for the wARTe project in September 2024, Gathering, this new collection of 11 posters began with what has already been gathered; once isolated in sketchbooks and portfolios, material I have accumulated over years of practice; fragments of time and thoughts - ready to become something new.
Drawing from my personal archives, I selected and digitally combined traditional media works, including charcoal sketches, ink drawings, pencil studies, and paintings in acrylic and watercolour. Embracing the infinite possibilities of digital editing tools, I put together visual elements derived from landscapes, plants, lines, pattern, brushstrokes, gestural marks and colour to compose new, unexpected, expressive floral pieces.
This series exists between mediums, between rediscovery and reinvention, between memory and thoughts of the future, between familiarity and newness. It explores what can emerge when we return to what we have already made and trust ourselves to begin again.
Sonal Nathwani is infinitely inspired by nature. Her signature abstract florals embrace the power of colour, a free spirit and the beauty of imperfection.
Born in Malawi to Indian parents, Sonal grew up in England, and is now based in Vienna, Austria. The opportunity to study at the renowned Charles H. Cecil studios in Florence in 1996/97 was a pivotal experience which ultimately led Sonal to leave a career in finance to pursue her passion. Experiencing this mix of cultures and diverse environments has enriched and shaped her view of the world and taught her to see beauty in the ordinary.
